Day 1: Bushiyi Gate to Shiloko Camp (2,700 meters above sea level)

Upon your arrival at the designated trailhead via Boda Bodas, you will be warmly welcomed by our experienced team of ranger guides, dedicated porters, and our enthusiastic chef at the Bushiyi information center. Your family mountain adventure will commence with introductions and a comprehensive briefing, outlining the detailed flow of your Uganda trekking itinerary, the captivating encounters anticipated along the trail, designated resting points, the location for your refreshing lunch break, and the setting for your first night’s wilderness camping. Following the briefing, you will embark on your immersive journey, trekking beneath the verdant canopy of the Elgon Montane Forest, serenaded by the melodious sounds and calls of diverse bird species, playful squirrels, and curious monkeys, all while enjoying breathtaking scenic viewpoints on this Eastern Uganda hiking expedition.

Day 2: Shiloko Camp to Dubi River Camp (3,600 meters above sea level)

Begin your day with an early and nourishing breakfast, preparing you for the day’s trek. After packing your backpacks, you will commence your journey towards the second camp. This segment of the Mount Elgon trail features a sharp ascent, which will be approached at a measured and steady pace to navigate the ridge effectively. It is advisable to have snacks readily accessible in your daypack, as our suggested lunch stop will be a little further along the route. Upon reaching the summit of the ridge, you will be rewarded with a truly magnificent vista, as the landscape transitions into a more gentle incline leading towards the camp. Dubi River Camp will serve as our overnight accommodation for either one or two nights, a decision that will be finalized based on the group’s progress and preferences during this family-friendly adventure.

Day 3: Dubi River Camp – Wagagai Peak and Descend to Simu Cave Camp (14km loop)

Following a hearty morning breakfast, we will prepare for our ascent to conquer the majestic Wagagai Peak. Essential items for this mountain summit experience include ample drinking water and energy-boosting snacks such as chocolate bars and fruits. Given the conditions in the Alpine Zone, characterized by strong winds and reduced oxygen levels, it is recommended to wear your windbreaker jackets. Upon successfully reaching the summit, you will begin your descent, traversing the breathtaking Caldera rim, passing by the serene Crater lakes, exploring the Caldera base, and taking in the views of the Kenyan Peaks. Our route will then lead us via the Jackson seasonal pool, followed by a short trek to the proposed Simu Cave Camp on this guided mountain tour.

Day 4: Simu Cave Camp to Kajeri/Tutum Cave Camp

After waking up and enjoying breakfast, we will organize our backpacks and embark on a trek to our next campsite. The options include Kajeri Camp (3,383 meters above sea level, 12km) or, for a more extended trek after lunch, Tutum Cave Camp (2,667 meters above sea level, approximately 35km, potentially taking an estimated 8-9 hours of walking). To ensure the best nature adventure experience for everyone, we maintain flexibility, and a joint decision regarding the day’s destination will be made after assessing the group’s physical condition and available time on this outdoor adventure Uganda.

Day 5: Park Exit

Our departure point from Mount Elgon National Park will be the Kapkwai Sipi gate. Upon completing the sign-out procedures, Boda Bodas will be awaiting our arrival to transport us to Sipi Village. Here, you will have the opportunity to make a personal decision regarding an overnight stay or continuing onward to your next destination.

Day 1: Immersion into Elgon’s Embrace (12km, 7-8 hours)

Following a comprehensive briefing on the itinerary and safety guidelines, your outdoor adventure begins. Trek through the enchanting Elgon Montane Forest, immersing yourself in the symphony of nature. Keep an eye out for playful monkeys, colorful birdlife, and the stunning vistas that unfold along the hiking trail.

Day 2: Triumph at the Summit (20km round trip)

Fuel up with an early morning breakfast as you prepare for the exhilarating peak climbing to the summit (4,321masl). The 7km trek to the peak traverses a plateau and gentle hills, offering captivating views of the Kenyan side and unique heather and moorland vegetation like Scenocia and Giant Lobelias. While the higher elevation brings thinner air, we encourage you to hydrate regularly, enjoy snacks, wear appropriate protective gear, and maintain a comfortable pace on this guided mountain tour.

Upon conquering the summit and soaking in the unparalleled views, you will backtrack past Dubi Camp and descend directly to Shiloko Cave Camp for lunch and your second night amidst the tranquil bamboo and montane forest.

Day 3: Farewell to Elgon (6km)

Your remarkable 3-day Mount Elgon expedition concludes with a final breakfast. After signing out at the Bushiyi Gate, bid farewell to our exceptional team. You’ll then board a boda boda for a convenient transfer to Riverine Resort for a refreshing stopover (lunch at your own cost) or a change of clothes before your onward journey to Mbale town.

Day 4: Mawogogo Cave Camp to Kajeri Camp (12km, 3,383 meters above sea level)

After waking up and enjoying breakfast, we will organize our backpacks and embark on a walk to Kajeri Camp. This 12km trek is anticipated to take approximately 5-6 hours, allowing you to immerse yourselves in the surrounding natural beauty at a comfortable pace. While an option exists to continue to Tutum Cave Camp (2,667 meters above sea level, 23km, estimated 8-9 hours), we typically prioritize a more relaxed pace and will make a joint decision based on the group’s physical condition and available time.

Day 5: Kajeri Camp to Tutum Cave Camp (12km, 2,667 meters above sea level)

Our walk from Kajeri Camp to Tutum Cave Camp covers a distance of 12km and features minor and manageable steep sections that are not technically challenging. While not an exceptionally long day of trekking, the route offers truly epic views. Tutum Cave Camp is nestled within the montane forest, providing a comfortable environment with normal temperatures, minimal wind, and the delightful chorus of numerous bird species.

Day 6: Tutum Cave Camp to Kapkwai Sipi Gate (11km)

Our exit point from Mount Elgon National Park will be the Kapkwai Sipi gate. Following the sign-out procedures, Boda Bodas will be readily available to transport you to Sipi Village. Here, you will have the opportunity to make a personal decision regarding an overnight stay or continuing onward to your next destination.

Day 1: Kapkwai (Sipi Gate) to Kajeri Camp (3383masl, +1683mASL, 22.5km)

Your adventure begins with an early and energizing breakfast. Following this, we will embark on a scenic Boda Boda (motorcycle taxi) ride or a private car transfer for 12km to the Kapkwai trailhead, near Sipi Gate. Upon arrival, our dedicated team of experienced porters, knowledgeable ranger guides, and our cheerful chef will be awaiting you, ready to guide you on this remarkable journey. Today’s trek takes you through a captivating montane forest, offering opportunities to spot various primate species and unique forest birds. We will pause for a hot lunch at the strategically located Tutum Cave Camp before continuing our trek for approximately 11km to Kajeri Camp, where you will spend your first night nestled in the mountain’s embrace.

Day 2: Kajeri Camp to Mwongogo Camp (3800masl, +417mASL, 12km)

Awake to the breathtaking beauty of a mountain sunrise and enjoy a delicious breakfast. After packing up our camp, we will set off towards Mwongogo Camp, situated 12km and higher in elevation than Kajeri. The terrain today presents a combination of both steep and gentle inclines, interspersed with occasional uphill sections. Your efforts will be rewarded with increasingly stunning vistas as we ascend into the heather zone, characterized by expansive grasslands, unique high-altitude flora, and truly panoramic views. Mwongogo Cave Camp offers a spectacular 180-degree vantage point overlooking the Simu Valley, providing an ideal setting to enjoy a memorable sunset.

Day 3: Mwongogo Camp to Wagagai Peak (4321masl, +521mASL, 11km)

Today marks an exhilarating highlight of your expedition is the ascent to Wagagai Peak, the majestic summit of Mount Elgon! Following an early breakfast, we will pack essential snacks, ample drinking water, and energy bars to sustain us during our climb in the higher altitude. The trek to Wagagai Peak from Mwongogo Camp is approximately 5-6km, and the duration will vary depending on individual fitness levels. Our approach emphasizes enjoying the journey, encouraging you to walk at a comfortable and sustainable pace. Upon reaching the summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. We will then begin our descent, taking a scenic loop that detours past Jackson Peak, the tranquil Jackson Pool, the vast caldera base, and the picturesque crater lakes before returning to Mwongogo Camp for our second night at this location.

Day 4: Handover at the Uganda-Kenya Border Point (12km)

Today is a truly unique and exciting day as you experience the thrill of crossing into neighboring Kenya via a less-traveled mountain trail. Mount Elgon offers this extraordinary opportunity to visit its Kenyan counterpart. After an early and energizing breakfast, our dedicated team will assist you in packing up the camp and preparing for the 12km trek to the designated border handover point. Upon arrival, you will be met by the Kenya Wildlife service team, whose expert guidance will lead you through the Kenyan side of your adventure. They will escort you to the Suam international border, where your passport will be stamped, and your Kenyan visa (if required) will be processed. From this point, you will be in the capable hands of the KWS team, ready to explore the wonders of Kenya at your own pace and choosing. The services of our Ugandan team will conclude upon your successful handover to the Kenyan authorities.

Day 1: Bushiyi Trailhead to Dubi River Camp 3600masl 12km

Wake up early in the morning for the hearty breakfast, departure after on a public taxi if your aren’t on self-drive option and you spent a night in Mbale City and board out in Bududa Town then Boda Bodas Comes handy to connect us to the start of the trailhead in Bushiyi Village where the team will be waiting.
Our trek will start at Bushiyi information office, walk through montane forests, Bamboo zones, spot tropical species of birds, learn plants, enjoy epic views as you stretch your way to Shiloko Cave Camp as a first camp for Light hot Lunch then proceed to Dubi River Camp found at an elevation of 3,563masl for your first night. The tents will be set for you, served dinner, and if the weather is calm then just wait for your sunset time and later a bonfire moment before heading to your bed.

Day 2: Dubi River Camp to Wagagai Peak 4321masl

As the sun rise, we will be up for the breakfast, set off while enjoying the scenic route to Wagagai peak, view over Kenyan Site, experiencing moorland endemic vegetation like Scenocia, Mzungu hairy plant, encounter Giant Lobelia and heather plants. However, we will be gaining more meters plus, within this zone, meaning there’s little oxygen and sipping water of water and snack bite is highly recommendable to keep up the energy level. After summiting the peak, we will descend to Jackson pool then to our camp at Mwongogo Cave Camp 3,810masl for the 2rd night.

Day 3:Mwongongo Cave Camp to Kajeri Camp or Tutum Cave Camp

Departure from Mwongongo cave camp en-routing to Kajeri, is a top scenic trail walking downstream and in between magnificent Mubiyi rocks while detouring Mount Mubiyi, overlooking Simu Valley is yet another absolute gorgeous and captivating day of its own. The distance make up 12km with few inclines along. As soon as you arrive at Kajeri Camp, you will be served with hot lunch then have few minutes of rest and after you will make up a decision whether to proceed or spend a night. Or continue later for another 11.5km to Tutum Cave camp which an advantage is, is a short distance to the exit gate.

Day 4: Exiting the Park via Sipi Kapkwai Gate

Our final day of exploration will come to an end via Sipi gate, check out, and board Boda Bodas to bring us down to Sipi Village where you will have personal decision whether to have a night here or proceed to your next destination.

Day 1: Pick up from the airport and transfer later to Sipi Falls accommodation, check in, and later meet our senior local guide to brief you about how your Uganda hiking program will be arranged.

If time allows, a short walk to the sunset viewpoint will be ideal.

Day 2: 7:30am early morning Breakfast, and by 8:00am, you set off for the long nature walk that will take approximately 4 hours exploring the three series of beautiful waterfall and later return to the hotel for lunch as you warm up for the authentic coffee tour experience that will start at 3:00pm.

However, if later the weather stays warm and calm, a walk to the sunset view point will be a great opportunity for you to enjoy an evening at the sunset view point.

Day 3: Early morning Breakfast, wrap up and departure passing through Jinja to Kampala-Entebbe International Airport.

Day 1: Sipi Trailhead at Kapkwai to Kajeri Camp 33683masl (_+1,683mASL), 22km

After your early morning hearty breakfast, we will board Boda Bodas to the start of the trailhead which is 12km adjacent to Sipi and as soon as we arrive, the team of Porters, ranger guides and your happy chef will be waiting for you, ready to take you through a journey of a life time. You will go through a montane forest where if you chance, you will spot a couple of different species of small primates like , species of forest birds, as you will approach your immediate camp Called Tutum Cave Camp for a hot lunch stopover then later proceed to Kajeri Camp which is 11km away and will be your first night.

Day 2: Kajeri Camp to Mwongogo Camp 3,800masl (+417mASL) 12km

You will rise for the beautiful sunrise, enjoy well-made breakfast, wrap up your items from the tent, and later set off to our next camp which above Kajeri in terms of Elevation and is 12Km away to Mwongogo Cave Camp. The nature of the terrain is a combo of steepness plus gentleness a long accompanied with couples of inclines in between, however the beautiful sights is worth a regret. Between Kajeri and Mwongogo Camp, is within the heather zones, off from the montane forest and is just full of grass, flora and breathtaking views which you may termed it as panoramic insights. And Mwongogo cave is suited at the point over looking Simu Valley, giving you a view of 180 degree as you enjoy your stay.

Day 3: Mwongogo-Wagagai Peak 4321masl (_+521Masl), 11km

Our day 4 has always been the most hyped day to all our clients that have explored with us despite of all other highlights during the hike. We will set off right after breakfast, park snacks, enough drinking water and energy bars to keep the energy level and to sustain you on a little oxygen as you head up to the peak.
However, the Wagagai peak is 5-6km away from the camp whose time differs among hikers based on their level of fitness but as a team, we emphasize the “Journey not a destination” meaning walk at your pace and feeling comfortable as much as possible. After conquering the peak, we will later loop downhill detouring Jackson peak, Jackson pool, View of Caldera base, Spot crater lakes and return to our Camp for second night.

Day 4: Mwongogo to Hunters Cave Camp 3,870masl (_+70mASL), 11Km

After breakfast plus packing our backpacks, we will say bye to Mwongogo Camp and head out to camp whose name was derived from local hunters at the time when the park had not been restricted was later called Hunters Cave camp found at an elevation of 3,870masl and covering a distance of 11km coupled with gentle plus few steeper midways. What to expect on this trail are the panoramic views, unique species of plants, flowers, detour Mt Mubiyi and viewing counterpart Kenya and so much to perceive along the way. Here snacks comes ideal, enough water, sunscreen etc. Because as the pace differs, time utilize might go a bit longer. And within 5-6 hours, we could reach the camp where you will stay for the Fourth night at Hunters Cave Camp.

Day 5: Piswa Gate Exit (-1,680), 16km

The final day will start with a breakfast, pack up, and set off covering a distance of 16km on a gentle landscape, and the time of arrival at the exiting point will depend on your level of fitness and pace. However, we roughly estimate sometimes between 5-6 hours on average hiker and 6-7 for the slowest hiker. As soon as you reach the gate, you will sign out, say bye to the team, and later board a Boda Boda back to Sipi Falls.
